Red Ant Onion Harvester

Red Ant's onion harvester lifts, de-tops and conveys onions at field pace, provided it stays aligned to the row. BMEC developed the steering control system that keeps the trailed machine on line, so the lifting gear stays centred on the crop.

The challenge

A trailed harvester naturally wanders off the row as the tractor turns, the ground undulates and the load shifts. When the lifting gear drifts off-centre it misses or bruises onions, and the operator cannot watch the row and drive the tractor at the same time.

Red Ant needed the harvester to correct its own steering and hold the line reliably in dusty field conditions.

What we did

  1. 01

    Steering control system

We developed the control system that drives the harvester's steering. It senses the machine's alignment to the row and actuates the steering to keep the lifting gear centred.

  2. 02

    Scoped to the steering

Our work focused specifically on the steering control. It integrates with Red Ant's harvester rather than replacing its mechanics or other subsystems.

  3. 03

    Built for the field

Control electronics and logic designed to run with minimal operator input and to survive the dust, vibration and heat of a working harvest.
